Lot description:

Lakedaimon / Sparta

Lakedaimonian coinage of the 40s and 30s BC

Estimate: CHF 100.00

As (AE, 6.11 g, 22 mm, 1), c. 2 B.C. – A.D. 31. Bare head of Herakles to right. Rev. Club with handle upwards. Grunauer XXXII, 4, 8.1 (this coin). RPC 1109. Very rare. Olive-green patina. Good fine.

C. Iulius Laco was the son of Eurycles and was recognized by Augustus as ruler of Sparta in B.C. 2. His fall seems to have occurred as part of the conspiracy of Sejanus in 31. The family managed to survive, however, since a grandson issued coins at Sparta under Claudius (below, lots 932-936).
